Education Needs a Digital-Age Upgrade

Quote : "According to Cathy N. Davidson, co-director of the annual MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions, fully 65 percent of today’s grade-school kids may end up doing work that hasn’t been invented yet." ( Heffernen, August 7,2011) 

Reaction:  
I find this to be an amazing prediction. When you consider that the jobs we currently have available are able to support billions of people, what will this mean for the future? Will we lose current jobs and force people to learn how these new jobs? Will the new jobs co-inside and help reduce the unemployment rate? There is no way to know for sure how this will affect the work culture at the moment, but it does affect how we as teachers should be educating our students.  We should approach the classroom with a “forward thinking” attitude, rather than continue with the ways that have been used in the past. We must stay on top of the latest technology and introduce it to our students to give them the best opportunity to succeed as adults.

It's exciting to think that all of the high tech gadgets we've seen in movies for years can be a reality.

  1. I also found this qoute to very interesting and mind blowing, I was going to use it but decided not to. Anyway, I definitley agree that teachers need to approach the classroom with "forward thinking" because if 65% of students will be having jobs that aren't even invented yet we'll have to be doing some kind of thinking to prepare them.

  2. This quote is really mindblowing. To think that over half of students will have jobs that do not even exist yet is hard to imagine. Teachers need to be making changes in the classrooms to encourage this and use more "forward thinking".

  3. I enjoyed how you used the phrase "forward thinking," because it really shows what needs to happen in our schools. If teachers aren't looking forward for their students' futures, they aren't doing their jobs. A teacher is to prepare a student for the future, and "forward looking" is definitely a good way to see a classroom.
